Sometimes the hardest thing to do is talk about yourself.
This is when relying on others can help!
I have known Daniel for 5 & a half years. Initially as an instructor & now as a friend. I learned from Dan in group setting but he would always take the time to work with me in the class to ensure I was understanding & implementing techniques correctly. I was a particularly anxious student & I was pretty hard on myself.
Dan picked up on this. Once I started competing I would find that my anxiety would hinder my ability to compete to the best of my ability. I knew that Dan had done allot of work on his own personal progression in this area & I sought his advice.
He was so kind & helpful in his approach. He gave me tangible techniques that I could practice & use in order to overcome my anxiety. He also made me very aware that I was not alone in feeling the way I did & he went on to become a great supporter of my competitive endeavors. Daniel is a passionate & professional instructor & has allot of experience helping others.
I fully recommend his service & wish him great success with the lighthouse Jiu jitsu project.
I’ve been training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for nearly 8 years and in that time I’ve not only trained alongside Dan, but I have also trained with him, attended his weekly classes and also the competition classes run by Dan.
In addition to this I have had one-to-one private sessions with Dan, and I can honestly say that you’ll be hard pressed to find someone who is not only as knowledgeable, but loves what they do as much as he does!
He also competes at the highest level and suffers with all the usual anxieties (possibly more so) that these events can cause, so if you’re feeling those insecurities and self-doubts creeping in, then you can be safe in the knowledge that Dan has felt the same way too and learned how to deal with them!
As someone who suffers with mental health, it’s very reassuring to know Dan is in your corner when you’re not feeling 100%. It might only be a look he gives you or the odd well placed word or two, but that’s usually all it takes and that means so much on those ‘dark days’.
I honestly can’t recommend Dan highly enough, and you can rest assured anything he does he will do it to his very best ability. Dan is an amazing teacher, an awesome opponent, and an incredible friend and I wish him every success!
I've had the pleasure of knowing Dan for a couple of years now. From the start he has always been passionate about jiu-jitsu, taking his time to ensure you have understood the techniques shown.
There have been many occasions that I have needed a variation shown, as I'm a little shorter, and he has invested time in finding a way that suits me a little better. Dan has also highlighted aspects of my jiu-jitsu that have changed my mindset, in the way I evaluate post matches - teaching me the importance of positive feedback, rather then dwelling on what I considered bad.
I have always found Dan approachable and easy to talk to, particularly when asking advice about an off-mat defence situation which had led to a knock in my confidence on the mats. Despite the situation being relatively insignificant, Dan understood the impact it had and ensured I came away from the chat with him with more confidence. He is truly an inspiration to everyone, and with incredible emotional intelligence is one of the best jiu-jitsu coaches/mentors I've ever had the pleasure learning and training with.
I've been fortunate enough to train with Dan a number of times over the past two years. On every instance, he has always stood out for going above and beyond as a coach.
His experience and tuition go without saying, but above that he doesn't stop at the curriculum - Dan makes the time to address your anxieties, and puts genuine care into building your confidence and self-belief.
Having had my own struggles with anxiety in the sport, I feel that instructors like Dan are rare. You can tell when meeting him how much of his own heart he puts into supporting his team, and you won't find an instructor more committed to developing others, whatever your level is.
I would encourage others to take advantage of the opportunity to learn from Dan, without hesitation.
The hardest thing I've found in life is overcoming mental barriers, starting Jiu Jitsu was the hardest thing I had ever done. Dan Lewis made my first class an awesome experience that I'd never forget.
He made me feel so welcome and explained everything in clear details. Until this day he has helped me and continues to help me through my life of jiu-jitsu. I'll never underestimate how much that first experience mattered.
He's an amazing coach and an inspiration to all of the RGA Bucks family but more importantly he's a great friend. I'll forever be in his debt.
Dan is truly one of the most passionate coaches I have ever seen. Always willing to take the extra time to emphasis specific details and adjustment for students of all shapes and sizes. And although taking that extra time to ensure specifics are noted can lose people, his charismatic and humorous style ensures attention and fun.
Dan made me feel welcome from my first class, before being integral in elevating my game to a whole new level. Before working with Dan I had never won a single international match, and my competition results are now far more competitive. The effort that he has put into my development is far beyond that expected of a normal high level coach.
I feel the highest compliment I can pay him is this... A team is a reflection of the coach. The standards, the requirements and the abilities. And I count each and every one of his team as my family. If you are looking for someone that will develop you as a martial artist and as a person, then look further.
Dan really is one of the very best.
Dan is deffo a go to guy in BJJ. For anything! Having a crap session? Feel like you aren’t improving? Need help? See Dan!
The guy lives to help others on their BJJ journey.
From day 1 at 140kg he helped me train everyday- fall in love with the sport and watch me get down to an active 90kg.
My life has become a little more busy now and I don’t have as much time as I did- however Daniel is still always popping up asking me how I am and is still so welcoming at the gym. I couldn’t fault him at all.
A real gentleman inside and outside BJJ.
Daniel has been there for me since the start of my BJJ training almost three years ago.
His detailed classes and consistent presence at the gym have massively improved my technique and confidence.
He has taken the time to train with me in the run up to all of my competitions and helped me learn from any mistakes I’ve made. Daniel has turned up and coached me through the stress and anxiety which comes with the whole process of competing as well as being in my corner when I fight.
It is hard to put into words the respect and trust I have for Daniel, I am just pleased to be able to call him my coach and a friend.
Dan’s passion for Jiu Jitsu shows through in every class.
The time he spends on the mat training, the time he spends with every student, and his eye for detail. This attention to detail shows is intrinsic to the way he teaches techniques as his ability to pick up on individual challenges in a range of students at different levels.
Not only is he a great teacher, but he also puts himself out there as an example, competing at a high level and sharing the wins and losses with the team.
From my first class as a newby I was made to feel completely at ease and have continued to benefit from his teaching.
I have trained with Daniel for about 5 years now. As a seasoned martial artist (24 years ) I like to think I know what makes a good coach.
Daniel is without a doubt one of the best coaches iv had in all those years. He is not only a technically brilliant Jiu Jitsu practitioner himself. He also manages to pass his knowledge through his very clear and in depth teaching style.
Whether it’s your first day on the mats or you have been there for many years, Daniel will have something to offer you and help you improve your game. Alongside his impressive coaching skills he is a hugely supportive person with any other issues you may face on or off the mats.
I’m lucky to call him my coach and my friend.
Daniel is an exceptional coach and has helped develop me over my time in BJJ.
When I first started Jiu Jitsu I was extremely overweight as I was recovering from extensive surgery. I was 119kgs my confidence had hit an all time low.
Daniel has worked with me to develop my confidence and my Jiu Jitsu. January saw me win the 2020 European Championships at the age of 54.
Daniel's knowledge of the sport is tried and tested. He has great people skills which shines through in his classes.
He is a asset and a credit to the sport.
I have trained Jiu Jitsu with Dan since we were both white belts. Dan has always been an inspirational and motivated training partner.
I would highly recommend anyone interested in starting or developing their Jiu Jitsu to spend some time with Dan.
Dan has been training with some of the best teachers in the UK, is a black belt in one of the most legitimate affiliations and always has the time for his team.
On top of all that he’s a funny guy too!
Whether you’re a seasoned grappler or a first timer Dan's articulate, formative structure of teaching provides detail for everyone.
His attention to detail is second to none. I would highly recommend him, and any time possible spent under his instruction would be well worth it.
I have been doing Brazilian jiu-jitsu for over 10-years and trained with some of the best coaches in the world and Dan is one of the best coaches I have ever been able to train with.
His knowledge and attention to detail is second to none. Dan will be able to transform your jiu-jitsu and turn you into a champion not just on the mats but more importantly in the game of life.
I proudly recommend Lighthouse Bjj to everyone but especially those who need some coaching through the mental aspects of Jiu Jitsu.
I've been training Brazilian jiu jitsu for over 7 years now and have been trading with Daniel for the last 2 and a half years.
Honestly speaking on a personal level he is one of the nicest guys I've met and his knowledge if jiu jitsu is great and he has a fun but methodical way of teaching this martial art to us all.
If you would like to get into jiu jitsu or you want to improve your ground fighting game then I'd highly recommend Daniel.
He also teaches my sons and my boys really like his teaching methods.
